PURPOSE:The reaction between 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid and an allyl or methallyl ester of aromatic sulfonic acid in the presence of alkali hydroxide at a temperature lower than room temp. is followed by the hydrolysis to give titled substance useful as antipyretic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic. CONSTITUTION:The reaction of a phenol with glyoxylic acid gives 4-hydroxy- mandelic acid, which is reduced to 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid. Then, the product is made to react with allyl or methallyl aromatic suflonate in the presence of an alkali hydroxide at a temperature lower than room temperature to form a 4-allyl or methallyloxyphenylacetic ester, which is hydrolyzed to the compound of formula I (R is H, halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy; X is H, methyl). EFFECT:Allyl or methallyl aromatic sulfonate does not corrode the facility and the by-produced aromatic sulfonic acid, can be regenerated to the ester economically. |
