Guide heads (5, 6) are supported in supporting stands (1, 4) such that they can rotate. The guide heads (5, 6) are connected to one another in a rotationally fixed manner by means of a guide rod (7). The guide rod (7) is of circular cross-section and has a smooth sliding surface. The guide heads (5, 6) are driven by means of a splined drive (8) via the guide rod (7). A stranding material strand (13) is laid around the guide rod (7) in a helix having a large pitch. The guide rod (7) represents a reliable storage and guide element which reliably guides the stranding material strand (13) in a helix, it also being possible to change the pitch of the helix. As a result of the small diameter of the rotating system, the device permits relatively high rotation speeds.
