The drive unit for a moped has a pedal-operated crankshaft between the motor and the driving wheel and a lightweight gear unit. An automatically switched friction clutch and a switched rotation blocking device are engaged and disengaged in opposition. The friction clutch is operated in dependence either on the travel speed of the moped, or on the rate of rotation of the motor. It comprises a flywheel coupling with the pedals acting as the flyweight.
