PURPOSE:To improve the abrasion resistance of cast iron surface and reduce workability and cost by scanning the cast iron surface by the use of a high-energy-density heat source thereby making the surface portion to a chilled layer. CONSTITUTION:The surface of cast iron is scanned while being melted to a certain degree by using a high-energy-density heat source such as laser beam, electron beam or plasma to make the surface to a chilled layer (a), by which a martensite structure portion (c) is produced between the base metal (b) and chilled layer (a) and the abrasion resistance of the cast iron is improved. Since this method does not use any chiller as in conventional methods, arbitrary chilled layer is obtainable in arbitrary portion. In addition, this reduces surface roughening and considerably reduces margins for finishing and machining time. |
