In manufacturing a telecommunications cable which comprises a plurality of insulated conductors enclosed within a sheath and with the interstices between the conductors filled with powder of a material which expands if it absorbs water (to form a blockage against passage of any ingressing water along the cable), the individual conductors 2 pass through a tapering cavity to converge and become stranded together and the powder is thrust towards the narrower, exit end of the cavity by a helical screw 20, thus forcing the powder in-between the conductors.
