A projection display apparatus with a color temperature correcting function and a method of controlling the display apparatus are provided to allow a user to watch images displayed on the projection display apparatus at a uniform color temperature all the time. A projection display apparatus(201) includes a photo-sensor(203), a CIE(Commission International de I'Eclairage) x,y converter(204), a weight calculator(205), and a W/B(White/Balance) controller(202). The photo-sensor senses light around the display apparatus and transmits a sensed color stimulation value to the CIE x,y converter. The CIE x,y converter converts the color stimulation value into CIE x,y coordinates. The weight calculator determines the color temperature of the light around the display apparatus using the CIE x,y coordinates, compares the determined color temperature to a reference color temperature, and changes CIE x,y coordinates of red, green, blue and white according to the comparison result. The W/B controller controls white balance in consideration of the changed CIE x,y coordinates of red, green, blue and white to display an image at a uniform color temperature.
