Gas mixtures are separated by washing the gas mixture with a wash fraction in which the unwanted components are soluble, this fraction being produced in liquid state from the separation phase flowing downwards from the washing, and containing practically no unwanted components. The gas mixture is cooled by heat exchange with fractions produced in the separation phase, before it is used in the washing operation. The gas mixture may also be cooled by heat exchange with the wash fraction which is enriched in unwanted components, or by heat exchange with the purified gas mixture.
