The scattered light brought about by small smoke particles is utilised to improve the response-sensitivity of an optical smoke detector to the said smoke particles. A reflector (16) is arranged opposite the radiation source (14) in such a way that when there is no smoke in the measurement chamber (13) the entire radiation output by the radiation source is reflected by the reflector to the radiation source and does not impinge on the detector (17). If smoke is present, a portion of the radiation is scattered by the said smoke. Only this scattered radiation strikes the detector (17). <IMAGE> |
