A synthetic lubricating oil is carried by steam and sprayed onto the surface of the rolls. The pref. appts. consists of an inlet manifold pipe fed with a mixt. of the oil and steam. The mixt. then flows through a channel with a rectangular cross-section into a nozzle pipe possessing a continuous longitudinal slot via which the mixt. is sprayed radially onto a roll. The lubricating oil is uniformly distributed over the entire surface of the roll, and thus helps to provide optimum rolling conditions.
