The device has a feed channel (12) for the material particles to be applied, which channel opens out in an outlet diffuser (21), delivering the material particles. A pointed discharge electrode (2) interacts with an oppositely poled counterelectrode (4) to charge the material particles. The counterelectrode (4) is arranged upstream of the discharge electrode (2), with respect to the direction of feeding of the particles, the said discharge electrode pointing with its tip towards the counterelectrode. The two electrodes are effective inside the feed channel (12) in front of the outlet diffuser (21) in a discharge space (25) formed by the feed channel (12) and bounded by insulating material.
