The transverse shear has one or more knife rollers working with a mating one each supported by rollers mounted in the frame and acting against its periphery. The rollers (23) are mounted at points over arcs extending round most of the knife and mating roller peripheries (13, 14), the intervals between them being always less than 180 deg. The races for the supporting rollers can be formed on the surfaces of annular protrusions from the knife and mating roller peripheries.
