The fuel injection system comprises a continuously operating pump (2) which delivers fuel to a common pressure chamber (12) at a rate which is varied according to various parameters including the speed of the engine and the position of the accelerator (10) so as to deliver fuel at the rate required by the engine. Each cylinder of the engine has an injection nozzle (16) connected by a pipe (14) to the chamber (12). Each injection nozzle has an associated solenoid which initiates injection. There may also be a flow throttle, and fuel accumulator between each nozzle and the pressure chamber. The pump may comprise radial pistons, co-operating with an outer eccentric ring positioned in response to fluid pressure controlled by a slide valve or solenoid valve.
