An apparatus and a method for checking a position of a sensor in a TPMS(tire pressure monitoring system) are provided to reduce the number of the LF(low frequency) initiators by distinguishing left/right sides using the acceleration information received from a sensor. An apparatus for checking a position of a sensor in a tire pressure monitoring system comprises a sensor(10) installed on a front wheel or a rear wheel, a receiver(20) for receiving information from the sensor, a single LF initiator(30) for detecting a position of the sensor and a displaying device. The sensor transmits state information of a tire to the receiver through an RF(radio frequency) communication. The receiver is connected to a communications net in the vehicle to receive information of a vehicle speed, a throttle position sensor, a brake switch and a gear switch. A command is received from the receiver through the LF initiator to transmit an LF signal to the sensor.
