The starter has a shaft (2) in a casing (18) which screws to the engine (12). The end of the shaft has a ratchet connection (8, 9, 10) to the engine shaft (11) and its other end carries a hand lever (1). The shaft has two circumferential grooves (16, 17). A spiral spring (15) fixed in the casing (18) engages in one groove when the starter shaft engages the engine shaft and engages in the other groove when the engine starts and the ratchet moves the starter shaft axially. A helical thread (24) on the shaft and a ratchet (28) on the inner part (26) of the casing prevent contra rotation in the event of the engine backfiring.
