The process is used to pulverise fusible slag generated in foundries, coal-fired power stations etc, the slag being drawn off from a vessel and cooled. The slag is partly cooled on a rotating roll so as to form a strip with a plastic skin on the outside and still liquid on the inside. This is then passed through an uncooled tunnel, rolled, and reduced to the desired grain size, typically by crushing. After this it can be slowly cooled in a closed vessel, typically by a current of air.
