Opt. substd. hydroquinone monoalkyl ethers of formula (I) are new. R is alkyl and R1 is H or alkyl) are prepd. by reacting the opt. substd. hydroquinone (II), with an alcohol ROH in the presence of transition metal salts and opt. air or O2, pref. at 25-150 deg.C. The transition metal salts are pref. supported on ion exchanger resins. Para-methoxyphenol is used in the prepn. of anti-oxidants, pharmaceuticals, plasticisers and dyestuffs, as stabiliser for chlorinated hydrocarbons and Et cellulose, as inhibitor for acrylic monomers, etc. Tert. Bu-hydroquinone-mono-Me ether is used as an anti-oxidant in food industry. (I) are obtd. selectively without by-prods., in high yields, under mild conditions, without using expensive or toxic reagents. |
