A swivel arm punching tool has a drive manipulated by the operator to deflect the swivel arm horizontally. It can be set in one working position above the die, in a side-ways cut-out position and in a vertical stroke position. The leading side face of the swivel arm (3) is fitted with a number of sensors (7a-c) spaced a given distance apart. The sensors respond to the position of the die (4). Each sensor is connected to its own delay circuit, which switches off the drive for the swivel. The sensors have a common delay relay which switches off the drive.
