Stabilising aldehyde(s) against polymerisation of auto:condensation - by incorporating tri:ethanolamine or di:methyl-ethanolamine

aldehydes are stabilised against cyclising trimerisation or polymerisation and autocondensation, by incorporating triethanolamine (I) or dimethylethanolamine (II). Generally 10-150 ppm, esp. 20-100 ppm (I) or (II) is added to the aldehyde. The (I) and (II) give excellent stabilising action over long periods and require only very small addns. They do not catalyse the ald ol condensn. and do not interfere with the use of the aldehydes e.g. in the prodn. of artificial aroma compsns. The process is esp. useful for stabilising 8-14C aldehydes of the type used in synthetic perfume compsns. such as n-octyl aldehyde, n-nonyl aldehyde, undecylaldehyde, tridecylaldehyde, myristylaldehyde, methylnonylacetaldehyde, etc.
