PURPOSE:To prolong the regeneration cycle of a catalyst in preparing the title compound, by reacting a phenol with an alcohol in the vapor phase in the presence of a metal oxide-containing catalyst reduced with a reducing gas. CONSTITUTION:A phenol of the formula (R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 are H, 1-4C hydrocarbon, phenyl, naphthyl groups, etc., one or more of them are H) is reacted with a 1-4C alcohol in the vapor phase in the presence of a metal oxide-containing catalyst, which is pretreated with a reducing gas at 100-800 deg.C for 0.3-50hr, to give the title compound. The catalyst is obtained by clcining a substance containing aluminum, magnesium, manganese or iron oxide, zeolite, etc. in a reducing atmosphere, e.g. H2 or CO, or by further calcining a calcined one. |
