The angular speed of a moving object is determined by measuring the shift in frequency from the frequency responses of two luminous beams in a cavity and travelling in opposing directions. A calculator determines the frequency difference and consequently the angular speed. An annular cavity (1) defines the path for opposing light beams (2a,2b). The two coherent beams enter at the same point (3) from the same laser source (6). The two beams are obtained from a beam splitter (7) and are varied in frequency by Bragg cells (8) controlled by oscillator circuits (13,14). After traversing the cavity the beams are applied to photodetectors (12) and amplified (15) prior to coding (16) for input to a calculator (17). The calculator determines the frequency responses to determine the frequency difference and consequently the angular speed.
|
