Reconditioning of tripod type universal shaft coupling - involves insertion of spherical bearings and machining roller tracks to suit

The reconditioning process is used on e.g. tripod type universal joint shaft coupling. The coupling incorporates a core block (2) with a spherically segmented roller (4) on each of three radial cantilever axles (5), the rollers being located by open axial slots (3) in a bell mouth shaft end (1). The slot walls (3A,3B) are provided with concave arcuate transverse profiles forming roller (4) running surfaces. The reconditioning process is initiated by dismantling the coupling. The running surfaces (3A,3B) are now machined to a greater cross sectional radius, and the rollers are replaced by others of an appropriate greater dia. The bellmouth is retempered and the coupling is reassembled.
