<p>PURPOSE:To perform the treatment of waste gas with a high desulfurization rate without producing hard-to-treat byproducts by an aqueous solution containing iodine and a metal ion as an absorbing liquid in the desulfurization of a waste gas containing sulfur dioxide. CONSTITUTION:A waste gas containing sulfur oxides, particularly sulfur dioxide, is introduced into a desulfurization tower 1 through the line 3, where it is brought into cotact with an absorbing liquid containing iodine or iodine ion and a metal ion or its complex to cause a reaction of sulfurous acid gas present in the waste gas with the iodine, whereupon the sulfurous acid is oxidized to the sulfurix acid and at the same time the iodine ion reduced is oxidized by the metal ion or its complex to the iodine. In this case, metal ion, etc., reduced are sent to a oxidation tank 2 where it is regenerated by means of an oxidant from line 4. Thus, the sulfur dioxide present in the waste gas can be effectively absorbed and removed without producing byproducts which are difficult to treat.</p> |
