<p>The small vertical deflections are caused by motor vehicles passing over elements, such as steel cable, placed slightly proud of a road surface may be used to generate electricity. The elements are laid across the full width of the road at frequent intervals and are perpendicular to the direction of travel of the vehicles. The small deflection of the element operates a mechanism which moves the piston of an air compressor against a return spring. If there are a sufficient number of elements across the road and a sufficient number of vehicles pass over them, as would happen on a major road, the compressed air from each compressor is piped to a single electric generator which provides electric energy to supplement other sources.</p> |
