The invention creates a cable communication system for frequency and time division multiplex transmission of signals and information on a single coaxial cable (2). For simultaneous transmission of signals in both directions, two frequency generators (18, 19) are provided, and in each case a modulator (14, 34) and a demodulator (16, 36). With this cable communication system, a computer-controlled connection can be established between individual subscriber stations (3) and between subscriber stations (3) and a central unit (1) on a two-way communication basis. The cable communication system according to the invention allows a substantial saving compared with current multi-wire systems as a result of the frequency and time division multiplex transmission on a single coaxial cable (2). <IMAGE>
