The mechanism compresses domestic rubbish and similar material in a vessel. It has a compression disc (10) of smaller periphery than that of the vessel in plan view and which is hinge-suspended at a point (8) between the ends of a lever (6), hinging at one end in a vertical plane on a fixed point (4), while its other end forms an operating handle. The disc (10) can pivot at one end of a bar (9) which hinges at the other on the lever.
