Blockage is provided by a guide-wing on a floating flap in a sluice or culvert, in a tidal barier for regulation of tidal flow, allowing free passage for vessels when open, and opening automatically at a set excess internal pressure. Use is made of a segment-shaped buoyant element wiht lateral quarter-circle wings, with guideway and counter-weights, hinged to the base of the dam structure. Buoyancy can cause the flap to move for closure when the guideway is released.
