The motor vehicle bumper bar (1, 2) comprises two U-section slidable members (3) each contg. a stack of superimposed sheet metal insert plates (6). The members are movably held on the bumper bar by springs (11, 12) which are secured to them (at 9, 10) and anchored to the bar. The members may be located on the bar via pins (13) at their ends. The location and the springs are so arranged that the members only move relative to the bar in the event of impact. The bar (1, 2), members (3) and plates (6) can be of rigid plastics.
