NEW MATERIAL:A benzilidene derivative of formula I (R is H or 1-2C lower alkyl; X is carboxy, carboalkoxy, amide, or cyano). EXAMPLE:p-(o-Carboxybenzylidene)-amino-phenylacetonitrile. USE:An intermediate of compound II useful as a highly active antiphlogistic agent and an analgesic agent. The compound I also has antiphlogistic and analgesic activities. PROCESS:The compound I is prepared by reacting o-phthalaldehydic acid of formula III with an aniline derivative of formula IV in a solvent such as water, methanol, ethanol, etc., at room temperature or by heating. The compound I can be converted to the indoprofen II or its derivative by reducing with a reducing agent such as sodium borohydride, in a solvent such as methanol or ethanol. |
