PURPOSE:The oxidative coupling reaction between aromatic compounds is conducted in the presence of an organic palladium salt combined with a specific amount of an organic copper salt to prevent the deposition of palladium black from the palladium compound even when the partial pressure of oxygen is low, and to produce biphenyls in high yield. CONSTITUTION:The oxidative coupling reaction of aromatic compounds of the formula (R is substituent; n is 0-4 integral number) is carried out under an oxygen atmosphere in the presence of an organic palladium salt where an organic copper salt (copper formate or copper acetate) is added to the reaction system in an amount of 0.5-10 times the molar amount of said organic palladium salt. The partial pressure of oxygen is 3 atmospheric pressure or lower, preferably 0.05-2 atmospheric pressure. No formation of Pd black is observed even when the oxygen partial pressure becomes lower than 3 atmospheric pressure and the catalytic activity is sustained.
|
