PROCESS FOR REMOVING EMULSIONS AT THE INTERFACE OF ACIDIC SOLUTIONS AND SOLVENTS

Emulsions at the interface of an acid soln. and a solvent immisable in the acid are removed by passing a continuous fibrous string belt through the mixt. The specific gravity of the belt is between that of the acid soln. and the immiscible solvent, so that it can float through the emulsion phase. The belt, loaded with the emulsion, is drawn out of the mixt., the emulsion removed and the belt returned to the mixt. Used for removal of sludge in the organic solvent extn. of uranium from wet process phosphoric acid formed by acidulation of uncalcined phosphate rock. Uncalcined phosphate rock contains organic material such as humic acids which form the sludge emulsion at the interphase.
