Apparatus for protecting a thyristor (62) in a chopper which controls current flow from a power supply line to a load (motor 66) which has inductive stored energy, protects the thyristor from being subjected to transients from the power supply line. An electrolytic capacitor bank (60) having a zener conducting characteristic is connected across a series circuit containing the load and the thyristor. The voltage rating of the thyristor is chosen to be higher than the zener breakdown voltage of the capacitor bank.
