<p>PURPOSE:To prepare the title compound useful as a selective herbicide, in an industrial scale, in high yield, by reacting a 2-phenoxypyridine compound with a 4- hydroxyphenoxyalkanecarboxylic acid or its derivative in the presence of an alkaline material. CONSTITUTION:The title compound III is prepared by reacting a 2-phenoxypyridine compound of formula I (X1 is halogen or trifluoromethyl; X2 is H or halogen; Y is methyl; Z is halogen; l is 0-2; m is 0-5; l+m is <=5) with a 4-hydroxyphenoxyalkanecarboxylic acid of formula II (R is H, lower lakyl or cation; n is 0 or 2) or its derivative, in the presence of an alkaline material. The by-produced phenolic compound of formula V is made to react with a 2-halopyridine of formula IV to afford the starting compound of formula I.</p> |
