EXTRACTIVE SEPARATION OF COBALT SALT OF FATTY ACID

PURPOSE:To separate cobalt salts of fatty acids from a mixed solution containing fatty acid esters of polyhydric alcohols and fatty acid cobalt salts economically, by extracting the cobalt salts using methanol or acetic acid and water as extractants. CONSTITUTION:Cobalt salts of fatty acids are separated from a mixed solution containing fatty acid esters of polyhydric alcohols and fatty acid cobalt salts by adding methanol or acetic acid and water to the solution. The cobalt salts are concentrated to the liquid layer composed of methanol or acetic acid and water. This is economically applied as a recovery method of cobalt in hydroesterification of polyhydric alcohols, olefins and CO using a cobalt carbonyl complex as a catalyst. The amount of methanol or acetic acid added is 2-5 times the weight of esters in the mixed solution, and the amount of water added is preferably 0.2-0.4 times the weight of methanol or acetic acid.
