Radiographic examination of welding operation - using synchronised movement of emitter and recording equipment along welded seam

In the metallurgical industry, radiography is used for the control of certain manufacturing or assembly operations such as welding. The time to position the film and the inspection time is reduced by mounting the radiographic and recording equipment on tracks to move at the same speed. A radiographic X-ray emitter (1) and the recording equipment (2) utilising sensitive film are located on an axis (yg) parallel to the welded seams (5). A support block (5) carries the equipment in a perpendicular direction (xx) to the welds. Rails (17,18) above and below the welded sheet allow the radiation and recording equipment to travel across the sheet driven by an electric motor and pinion assembly engaging a rack gear attached to the rails. Both theequipmentsmove in synchronism.
