A system and a method for generating and reproducing an image file are provided to offer a file format including both 3D stereoscopic image and 2D image within one image file, so that a user can view the 3D stereoscopic or 2D image according to the file format. First video data is used when a 2D image is produced. Second video data and third video data are used when a 3D stereoscopic image is produced. An image file(210) includes ID information. The ID information displays whether each frame generated by the first video data or each frame produced by the second video data and the third video data is for the 2D image or the 3D stereoscopic image. The second video data and the third video data are synthesized together to reproduce and display the 3D stereoscopic image.
