The suction elevator is for the handling of bulk material, and particularly for discharging ships. It has a boom derricking in a vertical plane on a supporting structure, and a vessel turning about its lengthwise axis and temporarily accommodating the discharged material. The cylindrical vessel (11) also forms the supporting structure for the boom (10) which is mounted there via girders (42), secured to the vessel and extending in its lengthwise direction. Preferably the girders are of I-section.
