Access or permit cards are produced on a hand-operated press unit and the cards are checked by a sensing system when used. The card (23) is inserted onto guide pins (21, 22) on a bearing block. The coding is formed on the card by a punch (31) with projections that make a surface impression on the card. Force is applied to the punch by operating a lever (36) to move the actuator rod (28) downwards. Adjusters (41, 42) control the amount of motion to limit the depth of the impressions. The card checking unit has a sensor head of the form of the punch. Proximity sensors are used to check that the sensor head moves the required distance ensuring that the impression coding is correct.
