Welded pipeline joint e.g. for nuclear reactor cooling circuit - secured by split clamp around taper shouldered flanges

Welded pipeline joints, esp. for the coolant circuit of nuclear power stations, are produced by arc welding the V-shaped gap between the two short flanges at the end of adjacent pipes. The flanges have conical shoulders and are held together by matching split clamps of saddle shape with bolts at each end. This provides an additional safety measure in case cracks should arise in the weld and keep the pipe ends securely together. The egress of the coolant is prevented and both pipe ends are anchored in position.
