The battery comprises an alternating side-by-side arrangement of oven chambers and heating walls with regenerators underneath for preheating the combustion air and optionally the lean gas. Rich gas is supplied through a horizontal line (4, 5) between the upper regenerator edge and the heating flue base and through vertical lines (10) which branch off this line and lead to the individual heating flues and are provided with a calibrating element (11). The calibrating element sits loosely in the particular vertical line in the vicinity of the heating flue base (6) and ends in a vertical extension (14) of the rich gas line, which projects into the heating flue and the inner cross-section of which is sufficiently large that the calibrating element is removable therethrough, i.e. replaceable, even during operation.
