Diabetes mellitus in humans and animals, is treated by administering a carboxy phosphonate cpd. selected from carboxy vicinal phosphonates (I), dicarboxy monophosphonates (II) and carboxy geminal phosphonates (III). Cpds. I-III promote the metabolism of carbohydrates esp. glucose in humans and animals, and thus are useful for treating diabetes. They are administered in doses of 0.01-500 mg./kg., pref. 0.5-50 mg./kg. body wt. in a compsn. with a carrier. Typical cpds. are e.g. ethane-1,2-dicarboxy-1,2-diphosphonate and its sodium and pentasodium salts. |
