THERMOSETTING PHENOL-FORMALDEHYDE RESINS

Heat-curable phenol-formaldehyde resins are obtd. in a practically single-stage process and entirely at a temp. of at least 90 degrees C by reacting phenol with HCHO in such amts. that the mol. ratio of HCHO: phenol is at least 1:1, pref. 1.5:1-3.0:1 in an aq. reaction medium contg. at least one water-sol. catalyst of the metal carboxylate type, e.g. zinc acetate. Compared with the two-stage process of CA 927041 the amt. of heat produced is reduced and less time is required to heat the reaction mixt. from ambient temp. to room temp. A superior prod. is obtd.
