Title compd.(I), useful intermediate for manufg. 4-nitro pheny1-1,4-dihydropyridine deriv., was prepd. by hydrolysis of 2-nitrobenzylidene chloride(II) at 20≦̸-150≦̸C in the presence of water. II was prepd. by reacting alkali metal salt of 2-nitrophenylpyruvic acid with alkali metal hypochlorate aq. soln. Thus, 2.67 sodium ethylate, 2.5 oxalic acid diethy1 ester and 2.88 mole 2-nitro toluene were dissolved in EtOH and refluxed. The steam-distillated residues, Na2CO3, NaClO, NaOH, and toluene were stirred, filtered, and concentrated to give I.
