Tape drive mechanism - reduces tape speed by switching auxiliary rotor into circuit and engaging reduction gear while disengaging main motor

A drive system for a band such as a film or magnetic tape has a primary electric motor (1) driving a toothed wheel (5). An auxiliary motor (12) is used for speeds lower than the 300 r.p.m. lower limit of the primary motor. To engage the auxiliary motor an electromagnet is energised to displace axially a rod (16) against a coil spring (22). The rod trips a microswitch (17) energising the auxiliary motor. The rod also connects with one end of a lever (17) pivoted intermediate its ends and whose other end engages an axially movable spindle (18) driven by the auxiliary motor. The spindle carries an axially movable pinion (28) which is carried into engagement with the toothed wheel (5) when pivoting of the lever (17) displaces the spindle. The relative diameters of the pinion and toothed wheel provides a reducing gear for the lower speeds.
