An elastic composite yarn comprises a first non-elastic component, and a second, fine elastic yarn, knotted or stitched under tension to the first at intervals, so that when the second component is relaxed, the first forms loops between the knots or stitches. The yarn may be used to provide textiles having elastic properties, using wrapped yarns which are not themselves elastic, since the elasticity lies in the wrapping yarn. The textile fabric may be used to cover the seats of chairs, or for slippers, tights and belts.
