The disc brake uses a demountable sectional friction wheel to apply braking forces to a driven axle (1). The wheel constitutes bolted (10) circular segments (2,3) and the segments are bolted (10a) to a hub (8,9) which is force fitted on the axle (1). Two segments are used, one (2) with a chord length (L) which nominally exceeds the axle dia., (D). The other (3) is longer subtending some 340 degrees of arc. This obviates differential segment distortions due to high operational temperatures. The segments each comprise parallel discs (4,5) connected by radial ribs (6) and a diaphragm (d) on an intermediate circle. The jointing faces are non radial and parallel. The jointing faces may have complementary angular undulations in cross section for centring, and the hub flange may have a lateral 'Z' section.
|
