A rail conversion for a road vehicle has a flat frame supported on the rails by flanged wheels and with a set of rollers on which the road wheels locate. Some of the rollers are coupled to the flanged wheels and transfer the drive torque from the road vehicle to the flanged wheels. Access to and from the transporters is via shallow ramps. The ends of the transporter are fitted with adjustable rollers to prevent the road vehicle from falling off. The simple conversion provides a low cost facility for transferring large road loads to the rails.
