The aldehydes are pref produced by hydroformylation of diisotutylene or tripropylene. The hydroformylation is pref carried out at 70-160 degrees C under a pressure of 100-400 bar in the presence of a catalyst mixture of tertiary phosphines and rhodium carbonyl complexes containing these tertiazyphosphines. As cleaning, disinfectant and preservative agents for textiles, floors, and hospital equipment and instruments, and in dairies, breweries and laundries. The aldehydes can be used in such agents in concns of 0.1-25 (pref. 0.5-20)wt%. The aldehydes can also be used as preservatives for technical products which are subject to attack by fungi and bacteria, e.g. starch pastes, sizes, emulsion paints, and cutting and drilling oils. The aldehydes are generally used in an amount of 0.1-2% of the wt. of the material to be preserved. The aldehydes are pleasant smelling.
