Switching off the charge current for a battery in conformity with the actual state of the charge level is ensured by sensing the rise of battery voltage. This is carried out at set time intervals using a comparator (13) which discriminates the battery voltage against a reference source (14). When the voltage rise in the battery is below the given limit, it turns off the unit while overshoot is followed by readjustment of the reference source for rechecking at the next scan using control circuit (16). The monitor (3) is connected to a one-slot multivibrator (4) for resetting, and the charge current is sensed from voltage drop across the resistor (7) connected to an amplifier (8) feeding the difference amplifier (9). The comparator (13) is connected to a control circuit (16) driven by a timer (17).
