Prodn. of orthosilicate esters (I) involves reacting a hexafluorosilicate with an alcohol in the presence of a metal salt, the F cpd. of which is more stable than the metal hexafluorosilicate in alcoholic medium and a proton acceptor. (I) are useful as binders in precision casting, shell moulding and ceramic compsns., for the surface treatment of glassware, as hydraulic and heat transfer fluids and for hardening silicones. The process is simple and avoids the need for costly alcoholates and high temps.
