Cutting machine fitted with >=1 slitting discs is employed to cut >=1 continuous longitudinal slot in the worn lining or slag deposit, where the slot extends over the entire length of the vessel; and the lining is then subjected to periodic shock. Shock is pref. created by mechanical-, pneumatic-, or hydraulic-vibrators mounted on the wall of the vessel. Shock may alternatively be created by rotating the vessel in one or alternate directions. Two long slots are pref. used and spaced 50-250 mm apart from each other; and a radial slot is pref. used in the middle of the vessel, esp. near an access hatch or manhole. Eliminates arduous manual labour.
